Department of Public Health

The Department of Public Health oversees the planning, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of public health interventions and programmes in Sokoto State. As a key policy and supervisory wing, our mission is to improve the health and well-being of all residents by promoting disease prevention, health promotion, and effective public health service delivery. We coordinate these vital activities through specialized units that address the State’s most pressing public health priorities in line with national health policies and guidelines.

Core Responsibilities

Operational Units

Epidemiology & Disease Control

This division encompasses the Epidemiological Unit, Non-communicable Disease Unit, and Guinea Worm Unit. It is dedicated to tracking disease outbreaks, conducting surveillance, and mitigating long-term health conditions.

Integrating the Child Health Unit and Nutrition Unit, this branch focuses on the developmental health, dietary needs, and survival interventions for children and mothers across the State.

Combining the Environmental Unit and Health Inspectorate Unit, this team is responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance, community sanitation, and safe living conditions to prevent environmental health hazards.

Featuring the Health Promotion Unit and Mental Health Unit, this division works to destigmatize psychological care and educate the public on proactive wellness and disease prevention.

Consisting of the Humanitarian Response team, the Public Health Laboratory, and the Hospital Liaison Unit, this critical branch handles advanced diagnostics, crisis management, and emergency medical coordination.
