Department of Pharmaceutical Services
The Department of Pharmaceutical Services is mandated to ensure the continuous availability, accessibility, and affordability of safe, efficacious, and quality-assured medicines across Sokoto State. We oversee the entire pharmaceutical supply chain—from strategic procurement and secure warehousing to distribution and rational use within all state-owned health facilities. Beyond supply logistics, our department serves as a strict regulatory body, monitoring pharmaceutical practices and retail medicine vendors to safeguard the public against counterfeit and substandard drugs.
Core Responsibilities
- Regulatory Oversight: Regulate the training, education, and practice of Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians in the State in Collaboration with the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN), inspecting and licensing of pharmaceutical premises, i.e., Community Pharmacies and Patent & Proprietary Medicine Vendors in collaboration with the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN), issuance of an Annual permit to Traditional and Herbal practitioners and enforcement of Drug laws in collaboration with NDLEA.
- Supply Chain Management: Forecasting, procuring, and distributing essential medicines, vaccines, and medical commodities to health facilities statewide.
- Quality Assurance & Pharmacovigilance: Monitoring adverse drug reactions and ensuring all circulating medicines meet stringent safety standards in Collaboration with NAFDAC.
- Rational Drug Use: Promoting adherence to Standard Treatment Guidelines (STG) and driving public campaigns against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).
- Policy Implementation: Executing the State and National Drug Policies to strengthen pharmaceutical care delivery at all levels.
Operational Units
Pharmaceutical Inspectorate and Task Force Unit
Serve to safeguard public health by enforcing compliance with safety, quality, and distribution standards across the pharmaceutical supply chain.
Pharmacovigilance and Drug Information Unit
Acts as the clinical safety and knowledge hub, providing accurate, synthesized drug information to clinicians, pharmacists, and patients.
Logistics Management Coordinating Unit (LMCU)
Serve as the central coordinating unit for public health supply management. The unit is responsible for collecting, collating, and analysing logistics management information system (LMIS) data to prevent drug stock-out and expiry. It also tracks, manages, and supervises the delivery of health commodities to the last mile, as well as oversees supply chain operations to increase efficiency and reduce redundancies across different health programs
